Blue Skies of Texas Breaks Ground on First Freestanding Emergency Room (FSER) at a Continuing Care Retirement Community in the U.S.

San Antonio, TX — 30 Apr 2026 — Blue Skies of Texas (formerly Air Force Village) today announced construction of a new freestanding emergency room on its San Antonio campus. This is believed to be the first such facility of its kind in the country, bringing hospital-grade emergency care directly to a senior living campus.

This important addition will significantly expand access to high-quality emergency care for residents, staff, and the surrounding community.

The new facility will provide 24/7 emergency services, including advanced diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, and immediate treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. The project represents a major investment in healthcare infrastructure and reinforces Blue Skies of Texas’ long-standing commitment to resident health, safety, and peace of mind.

“Access to timely, high-quality emergency care is essential—particularly in a community like ours,” said retired Air Force Lt Gen Darrell Jones, President and CEO of Blue Skies of Texas. “We believe Blue Skies of Texas is the first continuing care retirement community in the United States to offer a freestanding emergency room on campus. This initiative ensures our residents and neighbors have immediate access to exceptional care, right at their doorstep. It also reflects our commitment to continuing to expand and enhance our services in the years ahead.”

In 2025 and 2026, Blue Skies of Texas was recognized by Newsweek and Statista as the #1 continuing care retirement community in Texas and #8 nationally.

According to George Linial, President and CEO LeadingAge Texas, “This represents a significant innovation in senior living.  When many senior living communities are shying away from healthcare options, Blue Skies is leaning in.  Their resident focused approach to senior living sets the standard for others.”

Construction is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2027, with the facility opening shortly thereafter.

Blue Skies of Texas is one of the largest not-for-profit continuing care retirement communities in Texas, serving nearly 1,000 residents across independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and hospice. The addition of a freestanding emergency room marks a significant milestone in its continued evolution as a comprehensive, resident-centered community.
