We Take Care of Our Own

A critical aspect of making a good choice about senior living is finding a secure and financially sound organization. Blue Skies of Texas has a long history in the Continuing Care Retirement Community industry. Opened in 1970 under the name Air Force Village, we provided excellent retirement living with access to continuing health care for retired Air Force officers and their spouses.

Central to our mission was to give priority to retired Air Force officer widows and widowers in need of financial assistance. The Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation was established as a 501(c)(3) organization to offer donors funding choices to support our charitable mission and other programs which enrich the lives of our residents. We are grateful for our many generous donors, including the Air Force Assistance Fund and Officers’ Spouses’ Clubs across the world.

Today, we are an open-enrollment Life Plan Community known as Blue Skies of Texas named in the spirit of our strong Air Force tradition. We continue the practice of Taking Care of Our Own, working to fulfill the mission of assisting widowed spouses of all backgrounds who faithfully stood alongside their loved ones.

Residents

Air Force Widows Fund – Widowed Air Force officers’ spouses, who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in need of financial aid, can be assisted through the Air Force Widows Fund. This fund provides living expenses, transportation, health services, and personal care services. Assistance is always provided in strict confidence to protect the dignity of these individuals.

Air Force Widows Endowment – Ensures we will, in perpetuity, be able to provide assistance to qualified Air Force widowed spouses.

Covenant Fund – To provide financial assistance if needed to qualified widowed residents who are other than Air Force. This fund is administered in a similar manner as the Air Force Widows Fund.

Charity Care – To provide assistance to residents in need who are not widowed.  This fund is also administered in a similar manner as the Air Force Widows Fund.

Healthcare

Skilled nursing and short-term rehab at The Mission are built on a person-centered model of care that focuses on relationships within a home-like environment. Donations to these facilities provide enhancements that make residents and their guests feel at home, along with medical equipment such as whirlpools, electric lifts and therapeutic devices – and such are the makings of excellence in health care.

Whether it’s assistance with medication schedules or mobility, Arnold House and Liberty House are ready to help our residents when they need it. Living in one- or two-bedroom apartments, residents are encouraged to maintain as much independence as possible, whether it be dressing, dining, cooking, or any other usual daily tasks. While staff check in on residents daily, your gifts can provide assistance in programming to keep our residents sharp, loved, and engaged, or provide enhancements for therapy or increased and secure movement.

Freedom House, Alzheimer’s Care and Research Center –This general fund supports social activities, facility enhancements, and staff training for our nationally-recognized dementia care facility and helps supply resources for our on-site childcare facility.

Freedom House Research Fund – Separate research funds support ongoing Alzheimer’s studies and a geriatric psychiatry fellowship in partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Sign up for a clinical trial here.

Hospice Care – Serving residents at every level, including independent living, assisted living, skilled care and memory care, we’re dedicated to a holistic philosophy of addressing all physical, emotional and spiritual concerns while also providing attentive palliative care with an emphasis on comfort. Your gifts help us make a difference for our patients and their loved ones.

Employees

East & West Employee Appreciation Funds – Lovingly known as the “tip fund”, these dollars are distributed biannually to full- and part-time hourly employees based on the number of hours worked. It generally goes to those in maintenance, housekeeping, and dining.
