Skilled Nursing Update
Healthcare providers continue to experience multiple challenges as they care for seniors in skilled nursing. Three factors have had a significant impact: a proliferation of providers increasing supply, reduced demand as more seniors attempt to age in place, and staff shortages as overworked healthcare professionals leave the field. These factors combine to give Texas the lowest median occupancy in skilled nursing of all fifty states at 55.7% in 2021. While most senior living communities have little recourse, Blue Skies of Texas is uniquely situated to improve resident care by consolidating skilled nursing operations at The Mission, our modern 80-bed residence on the East campus.
In the next 60-days, Blue Skies of Texas will consolidate skilled nursing operations at The Mission and transfer our current residents and staff from The Vista to The Mission. The Mission is located at 4949 Ravenswood Drive SA, TX 78227 on our East campus, just 7.1 miles away from the West campus. It is a modern residence providing state-of-the-art care and a robust rehabilitation center.
What do I like to do at Blue Skies?
How long do you have to listen?
VALERIE B, RESIDENT
We moved here to find the best of both worlds! Moving here while
still able to live independently, we have taken the hard task of
providing future care decisions as we age, off our children’s plate.
Our first reaction was that this looked like home.
ROLAND & BARBARA K, RESIDENTS
We found our ‘Forever Home’ at Blue Skies of Texas!
It is the best and friendliest senior living value that we visited.
ED & ANN A, RESIDENTS
It’s kind of crazy, but you always hear retired people say
they’re busier in retirement than when they were working,
and it really turned out to be true!
PAT P, RESIDENT
My wife and I have decided this is where we’re
planning on living when we retire. We want our children
to care about us, not have to care for us.
GENERAL DARRELL JONES, CEO
We moved in and it was like, ‘Whoa!
This is where we belong. Everything’s here.’
FIDEL & EPPIE E, RESIDENTS
I have lived at Blue Skies for 5 years. The entire staff continues to amaze us
with their extraordinary care, love, and support. They do this not only during
‘ordinary’ times but in this challenging time as well.

About Skilled Nursing
Skilled nursing is the right choice for those who require long-term, 24/7 medical care, but don’t have the acute needs that make hospitalization necessary.
While the care delivered is comparable, it’s the difference in settings that distinguishes one from the other. In a nursing home, the resident under care lives in community with others who are also in skilled nursing. In a CCRC like Blue Skies, the skilled nursing resident has the benefit of the broader community – including its range of amenities and programs, and the social milieu of the independent living and assisted living population – to enrich the experience of daily living.
Assisted living offers care customized to individuals’ needs to keep them as independent as possible. Comprehensive skilled nursing provides an even higher level of clinical care, whether the need is for more hands-on assistance with routine activities or rehabilitation services.
